San Millán de Suso (upper monastery) is located about half a mile above town on the Distercios mountains. The complex enjoys views of the landscape including snow-covered Mount San Lorenzo. Founded in 537 by the hermit San Millán, it is where he lived and died (574). The church and two chapels were originally carved out of the pink sandstone mountain; they are distinguished by Romanesque and Mozarabic features and delineated by horseshoe arches. In 923, a formal building was erected on the same site and entrusted to Mozarabic monks (the caves are still preserved in the interior).
The institution was inhabited by Benedictine monks until 1878 when the Augustinian Order took up residence.
All meals are supplied in the San Augustin Restaurant.
