The Monastery of San Bernedetto is an ancient Benedictine monastery located in Subiaco, in the region of Lazio.
Founded by San Benedetto as a small hermitage in the fourth century the building is spectacularly constructed into the curvature of a rock wall on Mount Tale, leaning against the sheer rock face and held up by nine arches.
The first interior works date back to the 8th century and by the 12th Century the monastic complex and church had been constructed in honour of the Saint.
The interior of the church is designed in marble tesserae and houses a portrait of St Francis of Assisi, now a pilgrimage destination. The Cross of St. Benedict, also found inside the Monastery, is believed to provide supreme protection against evil spirits with powerful exorcism properties.
