The monastery has 20 single and double rooms. A few have private baths, most have a sink inside the room and shared baths.
San Pedro sits on a plain enveloped by fields, a familiar setting in this part of Spain. Founded in 973 by the Benedictine community, the order has inhabited the institution since that time. Its Romanesque church was begun in the 12th century and completed many years later in Gothic style. Visited by thousands each year, the church is the most important part of the complex.
One of the oldest female monasteries in the area, its proximity to the Camino de Santiago contributed to its importance during the Middle Ages. The daughters of the most important noble families (including Sancha, daughter of Alfonso VII) were educated at the institution.
