The history of Convento del Divino Amore began in the 13th century when a fortress of the Savelli-Orsini family (Castel di Leva) occupied the site. The local population worshipped a fresco of the Madonna which adorned one of the towers. According to legend, a man walking under the tower on his way to Rome was attacked by a pack of wild dogs. He appealed to Mary for protection and the dogs ran off. Since then, the site has been one of the most visited shrines of Rome. During the bombing raids of WWII, the fresco was transferred to a church in the centre of the city. The citizens of Rome vowed to build a new shrine if the city was saved. It was and Pope Pio XII declared the Madonna del Divino Amore, Savior of the City (Salvatrice dell'Urbe). The image is preserved in a small church built on the site of the castle. Every year on the night before Easter, pilgrims walk in a solemn procession from Piazza dell'Obelisco to the shrine.
