According to tradition, hundreds of years ago the area was settled by a group of Andalusians fleeing the invading Moors. During those tumultuous years, the religious images they carried were often hidden in caves to protect them from the marauders. Due to an apparition of Mary, one of the hiding places chosen by the fleeing Andalusians later became a pilgrimage site. Around the year 1000, a small chapel was built on the site. In the 16th century, the first community of Dominican friars founded the convent. They remained in residence until the mid-1800s when they temporarily abandoned the convent during the suppression of the religious orders.
