According to legend, a picture of Holy Mary was found on Ardenza Beach in 1345. At the time, it was believed that the picture was hundreds of years old and came from Eubea Island in Greece. A shepherd took the picture to the sanctuary where an oratory was then built. It is now believed that the picture was the work of a Pisan or Sienese school of the 13th century.
